I'm Steve — an open-format DJ who reads the room and shapes the whole night, from understated grooves over dinner to a dance floor that won't sit down.

A great DJ doesn't just play good songs. They know which song to play, when to play it — and how to move from one moment to the next.

That's the whole job. It's the part I care about most.

The nights

Four kinds of night.

Guests dancing under festoon lights at a private party
01

Birthdays & private parties

30ths, 40ths and milestone birthdays. A set built around your crowd — the songs that made you, a few they don't expect, and a floor that stays full until the lights come on.

02

Weddings

From the walk-in to the last song: the moments matter, the transitions matter, and the dance floor at the end of the night matters most. Every wedding is different, so they're quoted individually — tell me about yours and we'll build the night around it.

Corporate events & awards nights

Polished and on time. Background sets for networking that know exactly when to turn into a party — awards nights, end-of-year functions and everything in between.

Bars, restaurants & venues

A sophisticated atmosphere for a dinner service, soul and funk at a comfortable volume, or a room that builds as the night goes on. Music that fits the space and the regulars.

How a night builds

One night, four movements.

One way a night can unfold. Yours gets its own shape — built around your crowd, the occasion and the music you want. Pick a moment and hear how the energy moves.

Warm soul, funk and disco. Understated grooves that give people something to talk over — the night starts long before the dance floor does.

About Steve

Behind the Decks

I've always had a genuine love for music, particularly discovering great tracks, finding interesting remixes and edits, and putting together sets that feel right for the occasion.

I'm an open-format DJ, with a musical taste that stretches across hip-hop, R&B, disco, funk, house and plenty in between. I enjoy everything from familiar favourites to more underground and alternative sounds.

For me, being open-format is about versatility. I'm just as comfortable spending an entire night exploring one particular style of music as I am moving between different genres. It really comes down to the event, the atmosphere and what people want to hear.

I put a lot of thought into my music selection, but I also know the importance of reading a room and adapting when needed. Ultimately, I want people to enjoy themselves, whether that means creating the perfect background atmosphere or getting everyone onto the dancefloor.

Let's talk music

Every booking includes

Prepared, then free.

Before your event we map the night together — the feel, the key moments and the songs that matter. Then, on the night, I read the room and let the set breathe. Preparation gives the night its shape; the crowd decides what happens next.

The setup

Professional gear, honestly described.

AlphaTheta / Pioneer DJ XDJ-AZ

A professional all-in-one DJ system — the same club-standard layout you'd find in a booth, in one unit.

RCF ART 915-A PA

Professional active speakers, well matched to smaller venues and private events.

I bring my own setup and suitable sound for smaller events, or use the venue's existing DJ equipment when that's the better option. I don't provide a dedicated DJ booth as standard — happy to talk through what your venue needs.

FAQ

Good questions, short answers.

What music do you play?+

Whatever the night calls for. I'm an open-format DJ — soul, funk and disco for the early hours, R&B and hip-hop when the room warms up, house and dance music for the floor, and the 80s, 90s and 2000s classics everyone secretly loves. One event might be Whitney Houston, Missy Elliott and Daft Punk; another might be Afro house and disco edits over a restaurant service.

Can we request songs?+

Absolutely. Must-play songs are part of the planning — you'll give me your list and the moments they belong to, and they're honoured.

Can we provide a do-not-play list?+

Yes, and I take it seriously. If a song is banned from your night, it won't be played — no exceptions, no 'but the crowd would love it'.

Do you bring equipment?+

Yes. I use an AlphaTheta / Pioneer DJ XDJ-AZ professional all-in-one DJ system and RCF ART 915-A professional PA speakers — a setup well suited to smaller events and venues.

Can you use the venue's equipment?+

When the venue has suitable DJ equipment, using it is often the cleaner option. I'll work out what makes sense for your space before the night.

Do you DJ weddings?+

Yes — wedding receptions, from the walk-in to the last song. Every wedding is different, so they're quoted individually.

What does DJ hire cost?+

Private parties start from $800 and corporate events from $1,200 — each including up to four hours of DJ entertainment and a sound system suited to smaller venues. Weddings and hospitality venues are quoted individually.

How do we check availability?+

Send through your date via the enquiry form on this site or email bookings@socialstereodjs.com. You'll hear back quickly with availability and a quote.

Where do you travel?+

I cover all of metropolitan Sydney and I'm happy to quote for events further afield. Send me your location and we'll work out the details.
